5 Ways to Overcome Adversity

Are you trying to keep it together? Lately, your emotions have been at an all-time high. Currently, the world is in a washing machine of turmoil. From the rinse cycle to spin, shit is thrown at you without a moment to catch your breath. The last time you really took a look in the mirror, your smile was replaced by a frown. A vacant reflection of a person you vaguely remember. If any of this resonates with your current state of mind, you’re not alone.  It’s time to replace those tears with the understanding that the best is yet to come. You’re bigger than your circumstances. Think back to your last setback. You didn’t see any way around it. A continuous flow of obstacles was placed in front of you to prevent you from moving ahead. But yet, you went around it or over it.

We can all agree that disappointment and sadness are a part of life. But we fail to remember that love, peace, and joy fit into the grand scheme of our existence. Painful experiences can have you lose sight of your resiliency. You feel like the sky is falling, and all you can do is brace for something to trample your spirit and squash your soul. How often have you been told to pick yourself up, brush yourself off, and try again? Yeah, I’ve heard it too.

Today, we will start the tedious process of putting in the work and loving ourselves. It’s much easier to choose happiness over sadness. Scientist says it takes more energy to frown than to smile. I proclaim that at this moment, smiling will become the staple in which you live your life. Graciousness will become front and center of who you are.

Here are five ways to brush yourself off and try again:

  1. Feel that pain. It doesn’t define who you are. That last setback hurt like hell. It sent your psyche on a rollercoaster and you’re still recovering from the steep hills and the downward free fall. You weren’t ready for it, nor did you expect things to turn out this way. But yet, you still stand.

  2. Get movin’. Yeah, I know it’s easier said than done. Initially, you want to hide under the covers and wait the storm out. Instead, push yourself to do things that will not allow you to be stuck. Exercise, meditate, or hang with your girls. Shake off the sadness. Tomorrow is a new day.

  3. You’re bigger than this moment. Your brain controls everything. When you allow your thoughts to lead you astray, you’ll fall into a dark hole, and negative thoughts will impede your life. You’re much stronger than this problem. Cut out the chatter and nonsense that your mind will conjure up.

  4. Claim your superpowers. Think back to all the times you’ve been knocked down yet made it through. Take authority over YOU. Don’t forget there’s a reason you proudly wear that ‘S’ on your chest.

  5. Thank yourself. Okay, does that sound crazy? You’re so used to displaying gratitude to all those around you, but you rarely take a moment to appreciate where you’ve been and what you’ve been through. Show compassion instead of complaints. Mistakes happen; stop beating yourself up about it. Mishaps don’t define who you are, nor should they hinder who you have the potential to become.

Sis, stop looking in the mirror and only see your flaws. Your experiences have made you into a magnificent woman.  Honor who you are and embrace your smile!
